Fire classifications

It is important to be aware of the construction product's fire performance, especially their reaction to fire.

The reaction to fire is the assessment of how much a construction product will contribute to the fire and smoke development in case of fire. All construction products are classified into a fire classification established at the European level.

 A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F are all fire classifications. F is the worst, and A1 is the best

  • A1: The construction product does not contribute to the development of fire
  • A2: The construction product's contribution to the development of fire is very limited
  • B: The construction product's contribution to the development of fire is acceptable
  • C: The construction product contributes to the development of fire to a small extent
  • D: The construction product's contribution to the development of fire is acceptable
  • E: The construction product contributes to the development of fire to a relatively great degree
  • F: Whether the construction product meets the fire classification is not documented

The stars next to the fire classification are also significant:

  •  * means that the manufacturer improves the fire classification of the construction product during the production process (e.g. using fire retardant materials). In this instance, the fire performance will generally be subject to product certification, but only this performance (module 1).
  • ** means "all other construction products" (no improvement in the fire classification of the construction product during the production process).
  • *** means products where the fire classification can be obtained without testing/further testing
